Lessons

As a student at Malko Academy for Young Conductors, you will have the following lessons:

  • How we work with each piece

In the Academy, we study each piece in three steps:
First, the students analyze the piece in class.
Then they conduct the piece with piano.
Finally, each student conducts an ensemble of professional musicians in the piece.
In this way, we work with 11-12 pieces per season.
These lessons are taught by conductors Henrik Vagn Christensen and Ole Faurschou.

  • 1. Analysis

As the first of three steps in working with each piece in the Academy, during "Analysis" you will study the score, the music-history related to the piece, and you form an image of, how you want to interpret it. This is a group lesson, where all six students participate.

  • 2a. Conducting with piano

As the second of three steps, you conduct a pianist in the piece. This is a group lesson, where all six students participate, thus learning from each other’s mistakes and successes.

  • 2b. Individual conducting lesson

This is an alternative to step two (conducting with piano). Here you also conduct a pianist in the piece, but the lessons are individual. These lessons are a very efficient way to find solutions for your individual technical or musical challenges.

    3. Conducting ensemble

As the third of three steps, you conduct an ensemble (typically 8-20 musicians), most of the time consisting of professional musicians. This is also a group lesson, where all six students participate.

  • Masterclass

As part of your studies, you will have at least one masterclass with a world-class conductor, for example Fabio Luisi.

  • Music theory, score reading, aural skills

Here, you will be able to strengthen your skills with specific focus on those required of a conductor, who must be able to hear or read in an instant. This is taught in both group lessons and individual lessons.

  • Individual piano lessons

Here, you are given preparation in being able to use the piano as a tool in your future life as a conductor. The main focus is therefore on score-reading at the piano and playing with singer. These lessons are individual.

Please note: All lessons take place at DR Byen, Copenhagen, and the working language is English.
